The Journey…

I left for England after completing my Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Economics from Delhi University, India, and went on to complete a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Mathematical Economics and Econometrics from The London School of Economics in 1982, and a Master of Arts in Economics from the University of Essex, England, in Macroeconomic Modeling and Econometrics in 1983. Then I moved to the U.S. and graduated from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University, in 1985 with a Master of Management in Finance.  I am a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), retired, and was a member of the CFA Institute (1988-2010).

My career has spanned over twenty years in the investment industry.  I have an entrepreneurial spirit, with strong negotiating, fundraising and team building skills.  I have worked as the Director of Risk Analysis and Chief Economist for The Chicago Board of Trade Clearing Corporation, the Global Head of Market Risk at Barclays Global Investors (BGI) and later as the Director of Product Strategy at BGI.  During this period I was also involved as the founder and founding member of several start-up ventures.

Even as I was pursuing my professional aspirations and achieving professional and financial success, getting everything I wanted in terms of education at the finest institutions, living in San Francisco, finding the “woman of my dreams,” travelling  all over the world, still, there continued to be an emptiness inside.  There was a craving for “more” but I did not know what that was.  I was a typical type “A” personality, aggressive, driven and bulldozing all obstacles in my path.  There was no peace, just a feeling that if I got certain things I would be happy.  I acquired all the symbols of material success, but peace and happiness eluded me. Finally, in desperation and frustration I started to question everything, my existence, my purpose.  Is this all there is to life? Who am I? What is the purpose of life? These questions did not let me rest in peace.  If I could not find the answers to these questions everything else in life was meaningless.  If I don’t know who I am or what I am doing here, then how do I expect to give meaning to any relationship, career or acquisition?

This state of mind was the impetus for a deeply personal inner journey, an intense search, exploration and investigation into the meaning of life and its purpose.  It started with a train ride to Vancouver and then the train to Lake Louise, my favourite destination for silent, contemplative retreat, in Banff.  The book I had with me was Meditation by Eknath Easwaran.  Since then, I have spent several years, and continue to do so, in reflection, dialogue, deep contemplation and investigation in a disciplined manner, studying the Vedantic and Buddhist scriptures and other spiritual texts with an intense sincerity that they deserve.  The purpose of this exploration has never been to satisfy some intellectual curiosity and regurgitate some esoteric words, but to experience the peace and bliss within myself: the experience that takes place when there is truly an inner transformation and we know from our depths who we are and the reason we do what we do.

Soon pieces of the puzzle started to come together and I started to integrate science, psychology, philosophy, management, religion and spirituality into a seamless unified framework. The framework and my understanding transcended all boundaries, classifications, definitions and descriptions.  All that I experienced was a deep insight into the nature of things, and an inner state devoid of all tumults, anxieties, doubts, irritations, frustrations, confusion, anger, and other similar states of the mind.  This was an inner state from where I could BE and observe: a state of inner calm and peace which comes from inner clarity.  This journey was not undertaken with any specific goal in mind and neither by any design, plan or strategy.  Rather, life just unfolded, and I surrendered to its guiding hand with complete faith in the cosmic intelligence.  There was utmost faith and confidence that nature has provided me with all the tools necessary to realize my true potential.  I just had to realize that.  I just had to see the complete picture.  This was the ultimate freedom and empowerment.

Now I would like to share this incredible journey of mine with you, to live in a state of inner calm which comes from extreme clarity within.  A state experienced when we know our path to realizing our true potential.  I believe that we can communicate, teach and mentor each other so all of us can journey on our paths to realize our potential and experience that inner state we all yearn for.

You can talk about happiness; you can read about happiness; or, you can just be happy.
